WE CAN'T CHANGE THE WORLD?

IF A HUNGRY CHILD WENT TO SLEEP IN A HEAP OF GARBAGE YESTERDAY, BUT IS LIVING, PLAYING AND LEARNING IN A LOVING COMMUNITY TODAY - HASN'T THE WORLD CHANGED JUST A LITTLE?

Who we are and what we do
The "Kinderhilfe Kambodscha e.V." (KKeV) supports two facilities in Phnom Penh, run by the sister organisation KKEV-Cambodia. It has a children's village with space for up to 100 children as well as a street children program that provides school support for up to 120 street children.

The children in the children's village come from backgrounds of social difficulties. They are orphans or children without caring family structures. Often, these children have been mistreated, exploited or abused. In some cases we take care of children of parents who are infected with HIV and who can no longer look after their own children or of children who have been forced into child labor that was inadequate for their age. In short: we take care of children and adolescents from situations of socio-economic distress and crisis and they get to experience a real home.
V
ery few of the children and young people we care for today have had access to schooling before.
KKEV works closely with the Cambodian Ministry of Social Affairs. The Ministry determines which children qualify and approaches KKEV whether they have a free space. In the children's village, children between the ages of 2 and 18 experience care and belonging, receive attention and support. They find a home and are supported with the aim that they can lead and economically independent adult life.
The children attend public schools and we support them in acquiring vocational training and learning practical skills. We also help those children who want to continue their educational paths and want to attain a university degree. â€‹

The street children program is aimed at children who have a family but who's families live in great poverty and are usually dependent on their children's work. Children, living in the slums of Phnom Penh, can receive English and Mathematic classes in addition to their normal schooling and a daily meal in our care. The program allows children to complete the first 6 years of schooling successfully. The support received in the street children program is preceded by discussions between social workers and the families to ensure that the children and their families appreciate the effort and are committed to finishing school and interested in the additional educational support. The street children program takes place in a separate school building that is run by KKEV-Cambodia, close to the slums. Often the parents or family members living in the slums cannot afford to forego the income of the little ones, and they have to take them into the landfills, when they look for recyclable materials. However, if the children are looked after in the afternoons and receive a free meal, these parents can work during this time and thus support their offsprings schooling.

We aim to create a lasting impact in Cambodia and we  not only offer the children we care for protection from harm and a home, but we also work towards breaking the cycle of poverty through education and creating a stable environment.
